Meet the San Francisco-based 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the US.  Filipina Voices: Changing the Face of Power in America

The Millionth Circle (How to Change Ourselves and the World)
Jean Shinoda Bolen 2 "The Millionth Circle," writes Bolen, "depends upon a simple hypothesis: when a critical number of people change how they think and behave, the culture will also, and a new era begins."

Circles build upon what women do naturally, and have brought about major political and social changes.  Women in small groups grew into the Women's Suffragette's movement, which gained women the right to vote in 1920. Women in small consciousness-raising groups led to the Women's movement of the 1970s. A millionth circle movement led by women could change planetary consciousness.

About Jean
Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco and an internationally known speaker who draws from spiritual, feminist, Jungian, medical and personal wellsprings of experience.

She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a former board member of the Ms. Foundation for Women and the International Transpersonal Association.  She was a recipient of the Institute for Health and Healing's "Pioneers in Art, Science, and the Soul of Healing Award", and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She appeared in two acclaimed documentaries, the Academy Award-winning anti-nuclear proliferation film "Women--For America, For the World", and the Canadian Film Board's "Goddess Remembered".  Her website is http://jeanbolen.com/.

As we begin to implement FWN's leadership and peer mentoring program, we invite you to learn more about the Pinay Power 2012 Circle and Meet the 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the U.S. (those based in the San Francisco Bay Area)

Pinay Power 2012 Circle Guidelines & Principles (adapted from The Millionth Circle):
To participate in a circle, all you need is the desire, the willingness to attend the gatherings and to agree to follow circle principles. Following are some agreements that have helped circles to function more successfully for all participants:

· Create a circle.
· Consider it a sacred space.
· One person speaks at a time.
· Speak and listen from the heart.
· Encourage and welcome diverse points of view.
· Listen with discernment instead of judgment.
· Share leadership and resources.
· Decide together how decisions will be made.
· Work toward consensus when possible.
· Offer experience instead of advice.
· When in doubt or need, pause and silently ask for guidance.
· Decide together what is to be held in confidence.
· Speak from your own experience and beliefs rather than speaking for others.
· Open and close the circle by hearing each voice. (Check-ins and check-outs.)

ABOUT FWN
The Filipina Women's Network (FWN)
is the non-profit association for women of Philippine ancestry. FWN provides educational resources through publications, lectures, activities, and programs to further the professional and personal development of its members.  FWN strives to

  • enhance public perceptions of Filipina women's capacities to lead,
  • change biases against Filipina women's leadership abilities and
  • promote the entry of Filipina women into positions of leadership in corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors.

FWN achieves these goals through public education forums, community and corporate outreach, research on Filipina women's issues, leadership and skill-building/career development programs for Filipina women, and influencing popular culture.   FWN's current membership represents Filipina women from corporations, government and nonprofit sectors including organizations who support FWN's mission.

Why Our Meetings Are Different
FWN provides Filipina women with opportunities to share practical career and business experiences. This focus on actual career and business experiences, rather than theory, from practitioners, corporate managers and leaders, along with peer networking, are the distinguishing features of FWN meetings.

Pinay Power 2012 is a dream with a meaningful purpose - double the number of Filipina women leaders by 2012.  To achieve this goal, we launched the nationwide search to identify the Top 100 Filipina women who are shaping our community's influence in American society today and how they are impacting our future.

Pinay Power 2012 is a result of the Future Search at the 4th Annual Filipina Summit held in San Francisco last year.

This prestigious recognition is conceived as a working award - the Top 100 are invited to womantor a protégée and both leaders are invited to return to the Filipina Summit in October 2012 to celebrate their partnership, a culmination of our shaping the Filipina image campaign.

Moving forward:

By accepting the honor of being one of the 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the U.S., each honoree has agreed to commit to help Filipina women protégées as they begin their careers or take on other challenges in their communities and workplaces.  The goal is to change the face of power in America.

Sustaining Pinay Power 2012 is FWN's biggest challenge. As the excitement dies down and reality sets in, many will drop out and others will pick up the torch. And the Keepers of the Flame are the caretakers, ensuring the vision is kept alive.

Never again forget the role of Filipina women in the building of America

When the next 100 years of Filipino presence in America is celebrated, the 100 Most Influential Filipina Women and their 100 Protégées will be part of our Filipino history in the U.S.

Pinay Power 2012 is a strategic step in changing public perceptions of Filipina women's capacities to lead, innovate, and influence society.  The recognition program provides the Filipina American community a unique opportunity to honor the dedication and vision of those individuals who contribute to and participate in strengthening our community's competitiveness in the global marketplace.  By bringing together Filipina women who have shifted the course of events in their own areas of influence through ideas, activities, or interactions using persuasion, advice or street smarts, we effectively capitalize their influence and intellect for the benefit of our community and fellow Filipinas.
